Adrina Asuncion, a senior at Morro Bay High School, is one of the teammates on the surf team. Asuncion has been on the surf team for 4 years, Asuncion has been surfing since she was 8 years old. Monday, Sept. 8 was the first meeting of the surf team. This year was probably one of the best turnouts for that meeting. They had over 50 people show up interested in signing up for the club.

The competitions are around once a month, and they are all over the Central Coast. “Our first competition is going to be in Morro Bay,” Asuncion said. However, the practices for the surf team are every Monday before school, and usually everyone is out on the weekends, so they all see each other. Last year, during competitions, they scored really well and hope to score well this year too. One of their biggest competitions was against Ventura. This year, the surf team coach is Steve Gade, who also ran it last year. Asuncion said she enjoys surfing because, “It’s therapeutic, and I like to be out in the water with no phone and be one with nature.” Asuncion also says that surfing is a way for her to relax her mind and put aside all the things she has to do after surfing. One of the places that Asuncion likes to surf is out at the Rock in Morro Bay. Asuncion likes to work with her team to help improve and learn new things to do.

Bozley Brigham is a freshman on the surf team, so this is his first time being on the real team, but he did start a little early, practicing with them last year. Brigham started surfing when he was only 7 years old, so he has had a lot of practice. Brigham said that the practices for the surf team are only on Monday mornings, but he practices with Nakew Falkner. Brigham said, “I like surfing because it can be a very relaxing sport, but at the same time it can also be very competitive, which can make it super fun.” Some of Brigham’s favorite places to surf are at The Pit or El Cap. Brigham helps his teammates by talking to them about what they need to improve on and giving them tips that he likes to use when surfing. Brigham decided to join the team this year because he loves surfing, and he likes to be able to do it with his friends. So far, Brigham likes the team and is glad he joined. Mornings for Brigham are the best times for surfing for him. One person that Brigham looks up to for surfing is his dad; he has made a big impact on him, and he is glad to have him for help with surfing.

Nakaew Falkner is another freshman on the surf team this year. Falkner started surfing when he was around 5 years old. Falkner says that the surf team has five competitions coming up, the closest one is this coming up Sunday the 28th. Falkner said that he likes surfing because it’s super fun, and he gets to enjoy the sport with his friends. Falkner said what he likes to do to help his teammates is, “I encourage my teammates to keep surfing and help them get better.”
