This past week on Monday the Morro Bay High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball teams had their first game of the season against SLOHS, with both teams losing. The JV basketball team mainly consists of freshmen and several sophomores. The Varsity team has had most of the JV players from last year move up and the team is expected to be better than last years varsity. For the first game of the season both teams played their rival, San Luis Obispo High School (SLOHS).
The JV team would play first against SLOHS. At the beginning of the game both teams scored back to back. JV started to lose pace and lost 51-17. In the end the JV team fought hard and is determined to work on their weak spots and work towards the next game. When asked about what he hopes to improve on, JV coach Carlo Green said, “Everything. Especially ball handling, passing in order to reduce our turnovers and also we need to work on moving our feet and how we defend the screens.”
In the Varsity game, both teams played fast and hard. SLOHS would make their shots most of the time but MB would drive to the paint for layups. The score would keep going up and down with SLOHS scoring often, but MBHS would keep tying the game. MB Varsity player Joey Ruddell states, “I thought we performed very well as a team because we came together, but missed some of our shots.” In the fourth quarter however MB started to slow down but picked it backup a little. In the end MB Varsity lost in a close game 84-77. MB Varsity coach Roger Fechner says, “They were a bigger team and could shoot the ball well and we got tired in the fourth quarter.” Both teams are working hard to improve their skills for the next game on Tuesday.
