With Aquaman grossing over $1 million worldwide, and Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home releasing trailers, the debate between DC Comics and the Marvel Comics has become serious for nerds worldwide . The two studios have been rivals for 51 years as the longest lasting superhero comic companies. With hundreds of comics and movies on both sides, both companies have an impressive repertoire. But which studio is better?
For Morro Bay students, the debate is a controversial issue and many students have different opinions. Marvel supporter Lucas Mellom says “Marvel is better because DC cannot write good movies. All of the Marvel movies are well written and they come together beautifully. Marvel had the idea of all the movies making sense with each other and DC copied off of them.” “The best compliment you can give a DC movie is that it’s almost Marvel movie quality,” says Adam Rainbolt. On the other hand, student Joshua Keanaaina says “I like DC better because the Flash is my favorite character.” Defending Aquaman, Sophomore Sophia Nelson found that she could easily empathise with the characters and found the film visually interesting. While the majority of students lean towards Marvel, several students love both studios.
The two companies also compete to see which makes more money. With “Black Panther” Marvel racked up 1.1 billion dollars worldwide, and merchandise/DVD copies of the movie are still earning Marvel plenty of money. DC movies like Aquaman also made a comparable sum, but not nearly as much money as a Marvel has when films like Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War‘s total of over $2 million are taken into account.
Another important debate is the number of Academy Awards both companies have won. While, Marvel has won Best Visual Effects for Iron Man 1, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 as well as best makeup and hairstyling for Guardians of the Galaxy. On the other hand, DC has won three academy awards all for movies featuring the Joker. The most recent academy award DC has won was for hair/makeup in Suicide Squad. DC has also won awards for Batman (1989) and The Dark Knight in the best film set and the best supporting actor categories. As far as academy awards go both studios have had several impressive wins, but Marvel also wins in this category.
