On March 7 and 8, the Morro Bay High School Fusion Dance Company hosted their 18th annual Performing Arts show, featuring all the dancers as well as student and alumni musical performances. Our dance team has given its 14 student members a chance to work with guest choreographers, participate in a county-wide dance convention, choreograph dances of their own, and much more throughout this school year. To finish off the season, the Fusion Dance Company succeeded in putting on yet another annual performing arts showcase for students, faculty, families, and the community alike to enjoy.
I have been a part of the dance company for three out of my four years at MBHS, and have seen tremendous growth and appreciation for the program in that time. Each year has something unique and adds a new aspect of artistry to the program. Every group has specific students, pieces, and guests that make each performance different from the last. In the time I’ve been in high school, I’ve felt that the dance team has become more and more prominent on campus, adding on new performance opportunities such as an annual winter lunchtime performance known as Art In Motion and the first annual Dance Beyond convention in January.
We had a great audience reaction from those who attended the show on Thursday and Friday. The Friday crowd was especially loud and enthusiastic, with lots of dancer families and friends in the bleachers. As a senior in the dance company, the show felt very busy for me, but had a great payoff. I had the opportunity to be in many student-choreographed pieces and a senior dance as well. The backstage experience of the show consisted of many fast costume changes and enjoying our live musicians from behind the stage. Lily Morris, a senior who joined Fusion this year said that “it was really nice to feel more connected with your school and to be able to dance with your friends.” Morris was unable to participate in Dance Fusion in prior years due to her other commitments. However, she felt that “after seeing the show last year, it looked like so much fun, and I really wanted to do it. So, I made it work.”
The dance team will be hosting auditions for the 2019-2020 season on April 15 after school in the dance room. Students can come audition to be a part of the team and perform in next year’s annual showcase that is sure to be another success. The team thanks all friends, family, faculty, and community members who came to support our team last week, and for all others who contributed to making the show an entertaining and inspiring couple of evenings.
