It has been eighteen years since MBHS has their first dance team lead by Ms. Smith who has danced since the age of four.
Last week sixteen dancers auditioned for the 2019-2020 dance team. Out of the sixteen dancers, thirteen made the team. These dancers were judged by the senior dancers while Ms. Smith lead the auditions. For an hour and a half, dancers were given combinations that included; across the dance floor, funk, and lyrical. The combinations were to Billie Eilish songs. “All combinations were done repetitively to observe their capabilities,” said Smith. Dancers are required to have a “positive attitude, be motivated to perform, and be a team player.” They also need to be able to connect movement. The dance levels vary from the beginning to advance.
2019-2020 school year hasn’t begun, but the Fusion Company already has goals set. There will be a three-day summer workshop before school starts again, during the fall the dance team will be rehearsing for: “community events, performing for the first assembly, homecoming, and casting pieces while rehearsing to build a repertoire to perform throughout the year.” MBHS Fusion Team plans to host Dance Beyond once again, have their annual show on March 5 & 6; they will also be collaborating with the MBHS visual and performing arts program and the band for a show in April 2020.
