The Morro Bay High Pirates went head-to-head with the Gustine Reds this Friday in Gustine, CA.
The JV team was up first and they won their game 21-14. Running back, Pheonix Popp had a hat trick of touchdowns, rushing into the endzone three times. Hunter Whitson had two onside kick recoveries, not allowing Gustine to get back on the field. MBHS also went for a two-point conversion by giving it to the offensive lineman to little success. The defense was able to get two interceptions and a sack, and holding Gustine to 14 points.
Varsity then beat Gustine with a score of 38-7. Morro Bay passed the ball many times and mixed some running into the mix as well. Morro Bay got into their bag of tricks, bringing out many read-option plays, which gives QB, Kevin Franco, the option to hand the ball off to the running back, run with the ball himself, or pass the ball. MBHS also took the opening kickoff into the endzone. The defense, on the other hand, was able to get some sacks, and only allow eight points.
Morro Bay will have a bye week this coming Friday, meaning there will be no game so the team can have a rest period. After that, MBHS will have a home non-conference game against Mira Monte on September 27, at 7:00 p.m.
