On September 25, the Morro Bay High School Boys Water Polo teams played against Cabrillo High School in a game that resulted in a Cabrillo victory with a final score of 5-6 for Varsity.
Colt Laurie, a junior, said that in the game was “fun,” but that “Lucas’s shots were just not going in like they normally do.” Lucas Esenwein, a senior, is a captain of the team and is, according to Laurie, the team’s “best player” as a strong offensive force. However, the team is, in general, built on having a strong defense that works to slow down and control the game. This strategy was challenged against Cabrillo, who tried to overwhelm Morro Bay with fast-paced gameplay.
The Boys Water Polo team has gone through major changes this season. Their team, Laurie said, is weighted on the younger side after several seniors graduated last year. After a successful last season, they moved up a league to a much “harder league.” As a result, Laurie said that they have no expectations of winning the league this year and are instead looking to build their team for next year.
