Athlete Spotlight: Jessa Maurer

The Girls Water Polo season is coming to an end on October 23rd, and Jessa Maurer, the varsity team captain, is representing Morro Bay High with her strong leadership and amazing athletic skills.

Maurer, has gone out of her way this season. “Maurer is the team captain and has been helping out the younger athletes,” Mr. Andree, the athletic director at Morro Bay High shares. “Also, she is a member of the Junior National Development Girls Water Polo Team.”

2019 is the first year that Morro Bay is in a higher league, and Maurer describes the experience. “Moving into a new league has been really new for all of us, so we haven’t been winning as much as we would like,” she states. “At first it was discouraging, but since we are playing at a higher level, we have gotten stronger and faster. I think this is something we can all appreciate.”

Additionally, Maurer took on the role of team captain, along with the responsibilities it brings. “As a team captain, it’s my job to help the girls in any way that I can, whether that’s water polo related or not,” she shares. “We pride ourselves in the family dynamic of the team. Spending time with them is so much fun, we’re basically sisters.”

After an amazing four years of high school water polo, the journey is just beginning. One of Maurer’s goals since she was nine years old is to play on a college team. By helping younger athletes, she has left a legacy at the school and is ready for bigger opportunities.
