The 2019/2020 MBHS Boys Volleyball Poses. After a long year of waiting, the team has returned to the court at last.

Indoor sports are back in session, and Girls and Boys Volleyball started their practices on March 15th. Both teams have been practicing from 3:30-5:30 pm to prepare for their season. Playing against Paso Robles High School and Arroyo Grande High School, the Volleyball teams struggled, but came away with one victory.

To start off their long-awaited season, both teams traveled to Paso Robles High School to compete in their first game. JV Girls Volleyball began their first game at 4:00 pm on March 23, and led Paso with a score of 9-7 in the first set. The Bearcats soon took the lead from the Pirates with a score of 12-9 and not long later, Tamra Warner served up two aces in the first set to get the Pirates back up. But Paso took the first set of the match, and ended up winning the entire game.

The Varsity girls were up next and lost the first and second set with the same scores of 25-13 to Paso.

In the last set the varsity girls put up a good fight, although ended up short with a score of 25-18. The girls also played a back-to-back game against Paso Robles, and both teams lost for the second time around. The girls struggled to start the game, maintained a positive attitude. Junior Jade Hjelstrom said, “we definitely struggled a bit because we are missing one of our players and first game nerves but by the end, we were having fun and enjoying ourselves which is overall the main goal.”

Boys Varsity also played PRHS after the girls game, with a more successful result, taking their first win of the season. Their scheduled game against Paso for the next day was canceled. Playing their first set of the season, Morro Bay started with the score of 25-11 with Pirates in the lead.

COVID-19 has reshaped what matches look like through various health-and-safety protocols, but, according to junior Jordon Poole, “playing with the protocols isn’t as difficult as it seems. When you’re in the action the mask isn’t what you’re truly worried about.”

All teams also lost to Arroyo Grande Eagles the following week. Next games will be after Spring Break on April 13-14 against the San Luis Obispo High School, and Righetti on April 20-21, where the Volleyball teams will attempt to recover their record before the end of the season.
