MBHS Falls Short in Close Loss to Nipomo

MBHS went head to head with Nipomo High this week. It was their first home game since their big win over Carpinteria over two weeks ago. The Pirates were coming into the game 1-2, losing two of their last games, most recently against Fresno High. Nipomo came into the game with an undefeated 3-0 record, defeating Pioneer Valley in their previous game.

This game was filled with exciting highlights, both offensively and defensively. Senior running back Dylan Turner continued his dominance on the ground, using his strength to run defenders over like a bowling ball. Although his abilities out of the backfield are incredible, he was also utilized in the passing game. He had himself a few large gains over the middle along with a touchdown off of a check-down pass. Junior receiver/ kicker Ethan Lisman also continued to establish himself as a cornerstone of the team. He nailed four extra-point kicks to go along with a beautiful punt that pinned Nipomo in their own territory. On the receiving side, Lisman may have had the catch of the night. Rolling out right, quarterback Nicky Johnson threw the ball to the near right pylon. Ethan Lisman brought the ball in and narrowly got both feet inbounds for the touchdown.

Those weren’t the only two individuals who had spectacular nights. Senior Christian Merrill was looking like a human highlight reel on the field. Using his height to his advantage, Christian was just catching the ball over the Nipomo corners. This advantage led Christain Merrill to three touchdowns on the night. One touchdown was a go route over the middle, with Merrill catching the ball over the DB’s head. Another touchdown of his was on a curl route over the middle, catching the ball and running it in himself. His last touchdown came off of an amazing play by both him and Nicky Johnson. Nicky rolled right and found a wide-open Christian Merrill in the back of the endzone off of a broken coverage. He also had two large kickoff returns and a few big tackles on defense.

The score was close all game. Unfortunately, Nipomo ran away with the game in the fourth quarter. Their defense was able to hold off all MBHS momentum, and the offense was having their way. The final score of this high-scoring affair was 48-35, with Nipomo staying undefeated. The Pirates record falls to 1-3 despite scoring high in every game. MBHS will now look to move on to the Homecoming Game against Tranquility High. That game will take place on Saturday the 25th at 2 pm.
