Last Thursday the Morro Bay Pirates played the Pioneer Valley Panthers. The pirates won by a score of 38-21. The game was played at Pioneer Valley High School in Santa Maria.

Some notable players are Senior QB Nicky Johnson, WR Aidan Blackwood, RB Nami Hoag, and Junior WR Caleb Calhoun. Nicky Johnson had a rushing TD and 3 passing touchdowns. Senior Aidan Blackwood had 2 receiving touchdowns on a 21 yard pass and a 15 yard from Johnson. Nami Hoag had 1 rushing touchdown and Caleb Calhoun had a 9 yard receiving TD.

Pirates players believe that the offense wasn’t the only reason why they won. Junior, Ian Lambright said, “I think a big factor in our game was the special teams and the onside kicks, I thought they did great.” Coach Dougherty agreed with the saying, “ I think the special teams was really impactful, we do a lot of pop up kicks and it catches the defense off guard and we’ve recovered 3 kicks doing that so far.”

After this game Morro Bay’s record changes to 3-2 and Pioneer Valley’s record moves to 1-4. The next game for the pirates is on Friday the 30th for an away game against Santa Maria. The next home game will be against SLO High on Saturday October 8th.
