At MBHS, spring sports are beginning to pick up pace, including both the boys and girls swim teams. They have been preparing for this year’s season since March, and now their practice is being applied to both scrimmages and league meets. This year, there are five total teams in the league, including Templeton, Cabrillo, Santa Ynez, and Mission Prep. Both the boys and girls teams are ecstatic about the 2025 season, and many of the players are appreciative of all that their teammates and coaches have to offer.
The girls team is thriving this year, as they have won a majority of their league meets so far. The boys team is also doing well, however, some players believe they are working to recover as a result of the lost seniors from last year’s season. “We won most of our meets last year and we’re winning most of our meets this year, but I think overall our relays are slower because we lost our seniors,” said varsity player junior Jude Moore. Moore also elaborated on the team’s best meets to date, saying that the best meets so far this season are “our meet against Templeton and Paso, because everyone did good at that meet and it was close.”. Senior Grace Lindsey said, “Our home meets always go really well, those are the ones where we usually PR,” regarding her team’s best meets this season.
As for the girls team, Lindsey commented on her team’s eagerness to succeed at meets. “I think we’re doing really good, there’s a lot of drive between all the athletes, everybody’s very motivated,” said Lindsey. She also spoke of the team’s sense of community, “I don’t think there’s a dull day at practice, there’s always something to talk about. And the coaches are fun.” Moore also said that his favorite part about being on the team is “my teammates because the juniors are funny and they’re fun to be around.”
For their most recent meet against Orcutt on April 17, MBHS’ swim teams won with the girls winning 164-66, and boys winning 167-90. This puts them at four wins and zero losses in league matches for the 2025 season. Both juniors Jude Moore and Eddie Lu have made the hall of fame, Lu for the 100 meter fly and Moore for the 100 meter backstroke. “Both are qualified for CIF Sectionals and stand a good chance to win in the league in their respective events next week,” said boys coach Dan Szentesi.
Both the boys and girls swim teams at MBHS are off to a great start in their season. The teams are currently second in the league, and they have won all of their league matches so far. While it will be sad to see the many seniors leave at the end of this season, they are seeing many of the underclassmen taking a bigger interest in the team.
