Gunna
"The Last Wun" album cover
On Aug. 8, Gunna dropped his new album “The Last Wun.” This album contains 25 songs, including a lead single which was released June 13 called “won’t stop.” Rolling Stone rates the album a three and a half stars out of five. After recent controversy, this album is about reflecting, pain, and progress. In 2022, Young St*ner Life (YSL), the label that Gunna is in, was under trial for racketeering and accused of being a violent street gang. They were more specifically accused of murder, attempted murder, and drug dealing. Gunna took a plea deal and was seen as a snitch by the whole world, and even those close to him. With all of this, a lot of controversy came, and this album reflects on the situation.

As of Sept. 6, “The Last Wun” has been streamed around 280 million times on Spotify. In the first week of release, the album got 104.5 million streams, and on the first day of release, the album received 18.7 million, all on just Spotify. In 2025, this is the fourth-largest rap album debut, behind albums like “MUSIC” by Playboi Carti, “GNX” by Kendrick Lamar, and WHAM by Lil Baby. The highest-streamed songs at release are “wgft” featuring Burna Boy, which as of Sept. 8 has 19 million streams, “forever be mine” featuring WizKid, which has nearly 18 million, and “just say dat” which sits at almost 13 million. The song with the least amount of streams is “gp”, which is at around 550 thousand streams on Spotify.
Compared to his past albums, “The Last Wun” is more melodic, and there are different features compared to before, such as on “DS4EVER,” where he has Young Thug, Drake, Future, and Kodak Black. Gunna’s past albums have been more about luxury and money, while this album is more about self-reflection, and the consequences of his success. In this album, the features are Offset, Burna Boy, WizKid, Nechie, and Asake. While Offset and Nechie are American and from Atlanta, where Gunna originates, the other three are all Nigerian. Gunna himself is not Nigerian, but he has performed a concert in Lagos, Nigeria and is a very popular artist there. He is the most streamed non-Nigerian artist there, so he has these features obviously from a business side to get more streams from his Nigerian fans and to spread afrobeats to the US, but also to show support to his fans there.

In this album, he is trying to take a step back from YSL and the controversy, which is why the album is different compared to past albums. He has no features from Young Thug, which is expected with the controversy, but unlike the past where he worked with Young Thug a lot. He is stepping away from America for the most part in this album, which is where the controversy is, and that is why there are features from Nigerian artists because of the large fanbase there, and he is looking to focus more on them and away from the drama in the US. Overall, the album is liked by fans, they like the features and how he talks about his personal journey. One of the criticisms is that it is repetitive and some tracks are hit or miss. However, some of the positive criticism is that he is trying to change his sound and give a more mature and polished sound compared to past albums.
