MBHS Varsity at SLOHS
The Morro Bay High School football team’s season has officially started. Their first preseason game was in Maui against King Kekaulike in Hawaii. They put up a good fight but unfortunately lost in a high-scoring game, 48-68. Senior and varsity captain, Luca Macari, said, “It was a really fun trip. We got to experience the weather, the beach over there, and we were just having a good time.” Maui brought many team bonding moments, ranging from going to the beach to playing on the field.

When the home opener rolled around, the team faced Foothill High School. The game was down to the wire with the Pirates up by a mere three points with under two minutes on the clock. With the Pirates on defense, senior and varsity player,Tony Campanario made a fast-paced play, intercepting the ball and ultimately bringing the Pirates to their first home win of the year. Next, they played Lindsay High School, which they also won with a score of 52-24. They played hard and tried their best to knock this game out of the park. Lastly, they played Wasco and lost with a score of 16-55. In Wasco, Trevor Riddiough was giving his 100 percent. Senior and varsity captain Sands Dougherty said, “I think Trevor played really well because he pushed through the hardship of that game. The air quality was really bad there at the time, and it was a very hot game.”
When getting ready for the games, the boys rest and prepare for the game to start. Macari said, “For most games, we really have to hydrate to prevent cramps and stuff. Just get our bodies ready and to mentally prepare, we listen to music in the locker room.” Dougherty said, “We prepare with intensive practice and team bonding. It just helps us put together a lot of hard work during the week.”
Their last game that they played was on Sept. 19. They played San Luis Obispo High School on the Tigers’ home turf. The game was a physical match, with MBHS in the lead at the beginning, but in the end, they lost with a score of 35-49. The team was working hard on the defense and was working well together out on the field.
This season, the boys are working hard and trying to win CIF and get to state. Sophomore Cannon Rosenlieb said, “We’re going to go so far, we’re going to win CIF and state,” as well as Macari and Dougherty. Macari said, “Expect good, intense games, fun to watch, and a lot of wins.” Dougherty said, “We should expect a CIF title and maybe a shot at the state title.” They have been working very hard this season with practice every day after school, learning new tactics for their defense, and working on just having an amazing season.
