There is nothing more tranquil than going for a hike, and in the same breath, there is nothing more exhausting than going for a hike. In the quaint town of Los Osos, there are an endless number of trails to walk on. While some leave rocks in your shoes and poison oak oils on your hands, others are simply unbelievable, with views straight out of brochures and all-encompassing flora and fauna.
Here are 3 that not only meet the standard of a dreamy hike, but exceed it.
3. El Moro Elfin Forest

Elfin Forest, located near the numbered streets of Los Osos, has been a staple of the town for decades. The views are spectacular, not only of the bay, but of the astounding salt marsh between Morro Bay and Los Osos. The Elfin Forest’s Natural Area covers 90 acres and belongs to California State Parks. Its native plants are extraordinarily vibrant, with moss and ferns that surround the area. On top of the natural aspect being simply beautiful, the trail is one of the simpler walks in all of Los Osos, as wooden planks are spread throughout the forest to guide hikers. The trail appeals to all senses; you can hear the chirps of the native creatures, see the ravishing views, and even smell satisfying, strong, salty air throughout the preserve, only amplified by the constant winds. If one is looking for a hike that is accessible and quite easy to navigate, Elfin Forest is where to go.
2. Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve

Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve, one of the more notorious trails in Los Osos, provides a walk characterized by greenery and immersive history. Its beauty is located in the Los Osos Valley, between San Luis Obispo and Baywood. The reserve preserves centuries-old Quercus Agrifolia, better known as coast live oaks, that grow atop the dunes. Common wildlife lives all around the trail; birds, squirrels; however, it is also home to rare critters, such as the critically endangered Iron Maiden’s Hair lichen Sulcaria. In the vicinity of the Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve, there are many small bits of history scattered throughout, such as a fascinating Chumash site, north of the reserve, that dates back to 1200 CE. It is not only an incredibly beautiful, lively nook of Los Osos, but one so ingrained with culture and history.
1. Bluff Trail

Walking on Bluff Trail, located in the completely gorgeous Montaña de Oro State Park, offers a tranquil and extraordinary experience. The crash of the melodic waves echoes as you hike and offers a stunning view of the sea in all its blue glory. All around the area are mountains so intensely green that they look almost digitally saturated. In the spring, the trail is lit with a rainbow of colors, amplified by the wildflowers. The walk allows for perfect access to the beach, and thereby access to the intricate, wondrous tide pools and other local wildlife. You can see otters, seals, and a variety of beautiful birds. The trail is near numerous cliffs, which, even from a safe distance, allow you to see completely untouched nature. Bluff Trail is accessible, peaceful, and has a natural, unbelievably alluring beauty.
