On Nov. 6, MBHS’s very own girls volleyball team went to the CIF Championship finals in the big gym. This team of exceptional and hard-working girls had put so much care and time into their sport. The girls won in a 3-0 set against North Liberty High School from Bakersfield. The student section was packed with students from all across campus, waving around pom poms, holding signs, and cheering on with ecstatic school spirit. The girls made history in their win, and had everyone from our school beaming with joy and pride for this spectacular team. Senior Reese Kelly had the most exceptional sets, and senior/co-captain Alana Shields had spikes that only got them closer to their historic win.
Looking back on their CIF journey, senior Lily Williams said, “The CIF championship was so exhilarating but so stressful, I had complete trust in our team but it was still so stressful and competitive, but looking back, I wish we were still playing like I miss it so much,” highlighting the adrenaline that would come from these games and a deep appreciation for her sport.
Williams recounts the hard mental battle that came along with the sport in the past few years and the motivation it took to even continue playing at times when she felt discouraged.
When talking about her history with playing this sport for the past 4 years, Williams said, “I wish I could go back to my first year playing because I get so sad looking back knowing I took it for granted,” Williams said, “I am so grateful for the friends and experiences I had and I wouldn’t change any of it for the world, I love the connections I made and the experiences I had,” showing the tight-knit relationship players have had with their sport.
Unfortunately, their season officially came to an end on Nov. 18, at their regional championship at home against Elsinore High School. The girls fought hard and did their very best. MBHS truly couldn’t be more proud of them. The 11 senior girls on the team have effectively left their mark on the school, figuratively and literally. Later this year, they will have a banner in their honor with the rest of their varsity team to forever commemorate the first girls’ volleyball CIF championship win in our school’s history. It should be well known that whatever these girls have to face next in their lives, they will certainly be able to handle it head-on, no matter what.
