This year, the MBHS boys’ golf team is starting with a strong group of players: captain and #1 position senior Stone Hawk, along with a set of talented juniors filling spots #2-6. With this new varsity team, there is also a new varsity coach: part-time long drive professional Nick De Angelis. The team has had success under his coaching so far, winning two of their three pre-season scrimmages so far.
The MBHS boys’ golf team started their pre-season scrimmages on Wednesday, Feb. 18, with a match against Edison High School, from Fresno, at home. Winning by a total of 50 strokes against the Tigers, for a total of 434-484, Hawk scored the lowest on the MBHS team, with a final score of 79. “It was our first official tournament as a team; we had so many seniors who graduated last year, so we didn’t really know what our base score was going to be,” said junior and varsity player Reid Heffner.
Next up, the Pirates played at home against Dos Pueblos High School on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The team unfortunately lost to the Chargers, losing by a total of about 30 strokes. Of the varsity players, Hawk again scored the lowest, with an 18-hole score of 74.
On Monday, March 2, the team faced Sierra Pacific High School at home at the Morro Bay Golf Course. The Pirates beat the Golden Bears by a total of 60 strokes. In this match, Hawk again took the prize for the lowest score; however, junior Andrew Cellar had a great round, scoring a personal best of 81 across 18 holes. The total team score for the Pirates this match was 444, beating Sierra Pacific’s total score of 504.
Feb. 19-20, the boys had the incredible opportunity to go watch the Genesis Open tournament in Los Angeles. As part of the PGA Tour, this professional-level tournament was held at Riviera Golf Club in Palisades, California. The team travels annually to watch this portion of the PGA tour, but due to the Los Angeles wildfires last year, the tournament was relocated to San Diego. “It was super, super fun, we stayed in a nice hotel, we had a lot of team bonding,” said Heffner. “We ate some good food, watched some good golf, and it was a really good time,” he added.
This season, the boys will be attempting to work their way up the leaderboard of the Sunset League, which currently has six schools: Paso Robles, Atascadero, Righetti, Cabrillo, Nipomo, and, of course, Morro Bay High School. League for the boys officially begins on Monday, March 9, with a tournament located at Paso Robles Golf Club.
