Over the last few weeks, Morro Bay High School’s boys’ golf team has traveled across the county to play various teams in their league, with their league season officially beginning on March 9, 2026. The team has been able to work hard and push themselves, putting themselves at the top of their game. This drive has allowed them to place in the top three teams at all of their most recent matches.
For the team’s first league match, the boys played at Paso Robles Golf Club, which is Paso Robles High School’s home course, on March 9. Senior Stone Hawk took home the lowest score of the team. The team placed third at this match, losing to the second-place team by just one stroke. “We did good as a team,” said Hawk.
One week later, on March 16, the boys played at Monarch Dunes, which is Nipomo High School’s home course. For this match, junior Andrew Cellar took home the team’s best score with a 75 across 18 holes. The team placed second at Monarch Dunes, securing them with another successful match.
On March 30, they played a tournament at Atascadero High School’s home course at Chalk Mountain. Of the varsity players who joined them for this match, Hawk took home the lowest score in the team, shooting a 77 on 18 holes. The team placed second: “We beat the third-place team by 30 strokes,” said Hawk.
Junior Reid Heffner commented on the team’s growth, “We are playing way better. We’re shooting much lower as an overall team. [March 30], we just shot our overall personal best of 415. That was two weeks ago at Chalk Mountain, which is in Atascadero,” said Heffner. Heffner also commented on the course and mentioned it was “not a super nice course,” especially compared to MBHS’s home course. “But our team showed up. We played really well and had a lot of fun,” said Heffner.
On April 14, the boys traveled to Santa Maria to play at Rancho Maria Golf Course, which is Righetti High School’s home course. “That’s where our overall league tournament is gonna be hosted, so we want to get as much practice as we can at that course,” said Heffner. In about three weeks, on May 5, the boys will play their final league tournament at the Rancho Maria Golf Course. Up until then, the league’s teams will be making larger efforts to get practice in at this particular course. “We went over the weekend as a team and just played and looked at greens, read greens, looked at the course,” said Heffner. Hawk and Heffner scored the team’s best scores for this match, and the boys placed second, losing to Atascadero High School by just one stroke
The boys have been rapidly improving their skills, especially as they are approaching CIF, regionals, and state tournaments toward the end of May. The boys have shown massive growth across their last few matches, and hopefully, they will be able to take home more wins across their next matches. The boys are also approaching their senior night, with a home match on April 27.
