The Singapore Grand Prix took place on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 5:00 a.m. It was a controversial and action-packed match, leaving fans stunned. The top three podium was George Russell for Mercedes, with a total time of 1:40:22.367 and 25 points. Max Verstappen for Red Bull took second, and Lando Norris for McLaren took a controversially earned third place, which was the main focus of the controversy.

Norris placed third for this Singapore Grand Prix, which many believe is due to a controversial overtaking of Norris’s own McLaren Teammate, Oscar Piastri. Overtaking one’s own teammate is a common move for F1 drivers, with Piastri himself overtaking Norris during the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. However, Norris’s overtake of Piastri violated the Papaya Rules (an informal unspoken code of conduct that requires McLaren drivers to race competitively, but cleanly and avoiding contact) as Norris made contact with Piastri. This is the second time this season Norris has made contact with Piastri, also making contact with Piastri during the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix during an attempted overtake. Norris received no penalty or punishment from McLaren for his aggressive driving after the Singapore contact, which frustrated Piastri, who said over his radio. Norris accepted no culpability, claiming his aggressive technique was “good racing.”

Fairness lies at the center of the McLaren controversy. McLaren doesn’t seem to have the easiest run of the season, also handling a 30-million-dollar lawsuit from former driver Alex Palou. How does this connect to the Singapore Grand Prix? Fans of Piastri point to court statements by Palou, claiming Zak Brown, current McLaren Racing CEO, said to Palou, “Didn’t want to hire Piastri,” and claimed it was the decision of a former manager. Does McLaren favor Norris? Is Norris justified in his aggressive driving? This is for the fans to decide.

In positive news, 1st place Singapore Grand Prix winner George Russell has finally overcome a previously bad history with the Singapore race. Last year, at the ‘24 Grand Prix, Russell suffered from a panic attack caused by extreme overheating. His overheating caused him to lose over 8.8 pounds during the race due to extreme sweating and physical exertion, a result of the notoriously scorching and humid Singaporean weather. Russell also struggled to walk, control his breathing, and had muscle control and heart rate issues. All of Russell’s struggles were recorded by a documentary crew, who published his struggle and panic attack in their documentary, a move many fans felt was exploitative. However, Russell has conquered heat stroke, his team taking adequate measures to protect their racers from the heat. Russell commented that he was pleased with his win.

Explosive fireworks kick off the start of the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix.

The Singapore Grand Prix remained the action-packed and controversy-causing race that F1 is known for, with fans left with an excited buzz, ready for the Mexican Grand Prix. Fans are particularly excited to see how McLaren handles their team’s growing rift and divide among fans, whether Ferrari will make a comeback, and who will grace the podium in the Mexican Grand Prix, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez track being a notoriously difficult track.
