On Oct. 20, the MBHS girls’ golf team had their league finals at Santa Maria Country Club, concluding their season with an overall 3/7 wins. Over the course of the last month, the team has played numerous games across the county, with the most recent besides league finals being at Paso Robles High School (PRHS). The season brought a large number of people moving up to varsity, never-ending low scores in matches, and the ever-lasting community that is housed in the team.

The team took first place in their second-to-last match at Paso Robles Golf Club before league finals. Although, according to many players on the team, the first few holes were rough, the girls later overcame this challenge. “We all really tried our hardest and best, and at a new course, there are a lot of hazards too, with water and sand traps. It was just a really good, good match,” said varsity player and junior Peighton Lopez.

Lopez was previously junior varsity captain; with this season, she is now one of the top varsity players, “Really stepping up and showing that she deserves a spot on varsity this year,” said varsity player and senior Willa Turton. Whether it be through making notecards to prepare herself for the courses that she plays, or studying to see how each hole she plays will go, Lopez is driven to succeed. “She is just truly a bundle of joy and such a sweet girl,” said Turton.

At league finals, the team scored second place, putting them at second overall in the league, with the finals being hosted at Santa Maria Country Club.. Varsity player and junior Coco Fortini shot 103 on 18 holes, which was her personal best for an 18-hole round, as well as the top score for her team that match. “Working hard, being at practice every day, and participating in everything helped me grow so much this season. I can’t believe how far I have come from being a baby freshman not knowing about the sport to thriving and hitting personal bests,” said Fortini. Varsity player and senior Sammy Nishihama also scored her personal best of the season, and scored the second top score in the match for her team. Nishihama’s personal best on nine holes was a score of 51, and her personal best on 18 holes was a score of 107.

Aside from the matches, the team was due for some much-needed bonding since last fall’s season. Whether it was getting Chick-fil-A after matches or simply being able to spend time all together in such a tight-knit group, the team deepened their connection even more than before. “Telling funny stories and playing fun games have been my most memorable moments, literally just hanging out with my team,” said Fortini. With the varsity team being as small as seven people, every member of the team is extremely close and has bonded in such vast ways. “I think the longer we spend together, the closer the bond we have, and with that bond, we can go on and accomplish so much. And we’re just able to keep this high, high positivity and winning streak,” said Lopez.

With the season ending, there’s hope for an even better one just around the corner in the fall of ‘26. With returning players such as Lopez or Fortini, the team is destined for greatness, and more importantly, continuing on the legacy of the seniors who they were honored to play alongside for the ‘25 season. Congratulations on a successful season, girls’ golf, and best of luck for the next one, Pirates!
