It’s likely that at one point or another this school year, every student at MBHS has found themselves with nothing to do at lunch. As fun as it is to walk to Taco Bell or pay for overpriced coffee down by the Embarcadero, there are much more productive ways a student can spend their break, like joining a club.
FCA, or Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been a staple at MBHS for many years. Meeting every Thursday at lunch, FCA is a club where students can have a supportive and positive environment to share their faith. The group plays games, has a rotation of different guest speakers, and is infamous for their weekly, delicious pizza given to all who show up.
“Anyone can come,” said Co-Leader and senior Maggie Appel, “you don’t have to be Christian or an athlete. We welcome all and it’s just a great way to meet people.”
Senior Ava Amesse, a long-time FCA member and co-leader, shared similar sentimentates, as she emphasized that her favorite aspects of the club center around the community the students have created.
“I really enjoy just [hanging] out with everyone. I don’t really know how to explain it but it’s like everyone is just so familiar with each other, if that makes sense,” said Amesse.
In charge of organizing a guest each week, Appel is extremely on-top-off coordinating and communicating with speakers who have thoughtful messages to share with the club. Guests range from members of different churches across the county, to local pastors, to even simply individuals with powerful stories to tell.
“My favorite speaker was this woman who had told us about her experience being a young mother,” said Amesse, “I found it to be very inspiring.”
According to Appel, the average club meeting begins with a led prayer, usually given by senior Isaac Schooley, another long-time FCA member, then followed by a game, some free time to eat and talk with friends, and then a sermon or speech is typically delivered near the end of the lunch period.
Though the club is a place where students have fun and socialize, it is also a place that teaches them valuable skills for their futures.
“The club sort of shows you how to be a good public speaker, how to properly communicate with people, you know, how to organize events well,” said Amesse, “There are different committees within our club, people dedicated to planning our activities, our meals, our speakers, it teaches you a lot.”
FCA is a sensational club that provides not simply an amusing time, but a productive and beneficial one. All FCA members are more than ready to welcome all who are interested in joining!
