The wait is over. Four months since the OKC Thunder won the NBA Finals, and the 2025-2026 season finally tips off. The defending champions, OKC, come with a target on their back into the new season, while powerhouse teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets look to climb the ranks once again.
The opening games of the season didn’t disappoint as star players dropped high numbers in just their first games. SGA (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) went off for 55 points, which was controversial over the fact that he scored 23 points from the free throw line. Many believe he can’t score over 30 without double-digit free throws; he roughly averages nine free throws a game, according to ESPN. Some see this as Gilgeous-Alexander being efficient at drawing fouls near the rim, while others see it as “flopping.” Despite all that, Gilgeous-Alexander led his team to the championship last year and won Finals MVP, solidifying his status as a superstar.
Other players, like Stephen Curry, had 42 points, with 35 of them coming from just the second half, as he led the Warriors to an overtime win over the Nuggets. On the other hand, rising player Aaron Gordon, who plays for the Nuggets, held his own ground against Curry as he shot 10-11 from the three-point line and earned himself a new career high of 50 points. Victor Wembanyama showed out with a double-double of 40 points and 15 rebounds upon his return after having his season cut short last year due to injuries. Luka Doncic almost gets a triple-double with 43 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists. The third overall pick in the 2025 draft, VJ Edgecombe, scored 34 points in his first NBA game, showing how promising the rookie class is this year. These top performances from superstars to rookies set the tone for what could be an amazing season and what the league’s new era will look like with the young stars showing their worth.
This season, the league finally starts to feel balanced. In the past, the Western Conference was known for being stacked with superstars and superteams, while the Eastern Conference had a few standout teams here or there. While the West is still stacked with teams like the Thunder, Nuggets, Timberwolves, and a young and rising team, the Houston Rockets. But teams like the Cavaliers, who showcased a 42-26 win-loss record against the West teams last year, are ready to show what they’ve got again, alongside the Knicks, Celtics, and Pacers, who all fared well against the West last year. The growing balance has made the league more competitive than it has been in years. The East is proving itself as games are more evenly matched, playoff races last longer, and young teams rise to the ranks. With both conferences evening out, it makes it one of the most exciting seasons in NBA history.

Injuries are limiting young stars and their teams. Tyrese Haliburton led the league in assists last season and had a promising shot at winning the Pacers’ first title since 1973 until he ruptured his Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the Finals. Similarly enough, Jayson Tatum, a Celtics star, ruptured his Achilles tendon as well in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against the Knicks. Wemby had his season cut short due to blood clots in his right shoulder, which completely changed the Spurs’ chances. Injuries didn’t just affect young stars, though; veterans like Damian Lillard suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. Paul George underwent knee surgery, limiting him to only 42 games. While injuries hinder the season and trajectory for some teams, it also opens doors for young prospects to fill the empty roles. This gives fans chances to see new names while teams have to adapt and develop depth instead of relying on starters. Even though the absence of key stars changes the look of the league, it creates hunger in younger players to fight for a top spot again.
As the season begins, it is clear that the NBA is entering a new era of stars. With both conferences balancing and historic numbers being put up in just the first few games, it gives fans hope in what the league can continue to build and grow into for the following years, with this season starting as one of the most exciting in recent history.
