Every year, four major tournaments take place in the world of tennis. One of them is the Australian Open, serving as the first of the year’s four Grand Slam events, alongside the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Held in Melbourne, Australia, the Tournament annually starts in the last two weeks of January and goes into February. This year it starts on Jan. 12 and goes until Feb. 1, attracting millions of tennis fans and 128 players from all over the world, making it the biggest tennis tournament in Australia.
In 1905, the Australian Open started as a local Tournament called the “Australian Championships,” hosted in Melbourne, but moved locations to their neighboring country, New Zealand. In 1933, Jack Crawford won all the Australian, French, and Wimbledon Championships, which automatically turned the term “Championships” into “Grand Slam.” Years later, in 1969, it became known as the “Australian Open” and grew into one of the most important tennis tournaments in the world.
Every year, players compete against each other at Melbourne Park in the Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, and John Cain Arena, playing on blue cushioned acrylic hard courts. These types of tennis courts create fast-paced and aggressive matches.
The Tournament format is the same at all four Grand Slams. It consists of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Men’s single matches play the best of five sets, whereas women play the best of three sets. They all compete under the “knockout system,” meaning that if you lose once, you’re out.
Last year, Jannik Sinner from Italy won the Men’s Singles, making it his third Grand Slam win. Madison Keys won the women’s singles, making it her first Grand Slam title. The well-known Novak Djokovic from Serbia holds the record of 10 Australian Open titles, and Serena Williams leads the women with seven Grand Slam titles. Looking at this year’s tournament, top players such as Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek are among the favourites.
Australia, known for its hot weather, could create challenging conditions for players, such as high temperatures around 40°C (104°F). Due to certain heat policies that protect the players’ health, matches may be delayed because of the weather.
Just recently, the organizer, Tennis Australia, with Craig Tiley as their CEO, announced record prize money for this year’s tournament. $75M is the prize money, which gets split between the players according to their wins. The final champion in singles receives a prize money of $4.15M and a trophy, which for men is the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, while the women’s winner gets the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
Australia’s biggest Tennis tournament will bring exciting matches between the world’s best players, a great atmosphere, and the highest prize money in the history of the Australian Open, a unique tournament for everyone around the globe in 2026.
