With boys’ basketball being in the middle of the season, the teams are showing signs of greatness. Varsity broke their 8-game losing streak with a win against Golden Valley. After two more close losses, the varsity won two games in a row against Taft and Valley Christian Academy. JV has not yet followed up with more wins, so far being 1-6. Varsity and the freshman team won against Nipomo on Jan. 8th, Freshman winning 67-27 and Varsity winning in a very close game 50-48.

The boys’ varsity team played their first league game against Nipomo and won, a great way to start off the season. Stone Hawk has been doing great so far, averaging 13.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. In total, Hawk has 208 points, 147 rebounds, 49 assists, and 38 steals. Griffin Doherty has also been having an amazing season, his averages being top 3 in points, rebounds, steals, and first in blocks. On Tuesday, Jan. 13th, the boys will go on the road to face 10-3 Orcutt.

JV started off their season with a tough loss against Nipomo. Only losing by three points. Hadrian Norm-Reynoso, a freshman, and Noah Erwin, another freshman, combined for a total of 45 of the 52 points. Sophomore Hunter Stow and freshman Chase Taylor had the other 7. Reynoso has recently come back from injury, which has caused a major increase in the total points for the season. In the games Reynoso has played, the team has scored 52 and 37 points. Reynoso said, “ I believe the team could get better at running our plays and playing together. If we could pass the ball more, I feel like we could be better.” Reynoso also said, “ The most improved player has to be Hunter; he hasn’t played basketball for very long, but he’s definitely getting the hang of it.” The team has a good chance of winning this week, with them playing the 0-3 Orcutt Academy.

The freshman team has been doing great. Also starting off their season with a blowout win against Nipomo, 67-27. Avery Raya, Jaxon Lindsey, and Evan Furlong put up great numbers. Raya had 15, Lindsey had 18, and Furlong had 16. Lindsey has been having a great first season, averaging 12.6 points per game and having a total of 113 points throughout 9 games. Furlong has also been having an amazing season, averaging 9.2 points per game and having a point total of 92 points. Raya said, “ The team could definitely get better at shooting. We usually just feed the ball to Evan and let him shoot or pass it out. If we could get better at shooting from deeper, we could definitely blow out and beat more of these teams.” Raya also said, “The most improved player definitely has to be Evan; he has gotten so much better compared to last year.” The boys will go on the road against 0-2 Orcutt, to hopefully better their record
