MBHS girl’s softball has been improving by beating the San Luis Obispo High School JV team at their home field. They are now at one win and 11 loses. But in their last few games, they are hoping to get more wins. They play Santa Ynez on May 5, Santa Maria on May 7, and North High School on May 11. They played Atascadero on April 28 and lost. In most games, they’ve been scoring around seven runs. They lost to Santa Ynez earlier this season, but they’re hoping to come back and destroy them.
Freshman Savana Rhys plays catcher on varsity and is loving her softball team and season so far. “I’ve been working on my batting skills and also being more supportive of my teammates.” Rhys likes softball because it’s really fun and easy to socialize with people on my team. “There’s a lot of action in the games, which makes it really interesting.” Rhys said she wants to work on not striking out and getting a lot of doubles and triples. Her biggest challenge is playing with new players who don’t know what exactly they’re doing. “One memorable moment from one of our recent games was beating the San Luis High JV team last week.” Rhys balances homework and softball practice by doing her schoolwork after her practice. Rhys says she is still continuing to work on the same skills as she was last season. “Reese Kelly has inspired me a lot. She also plays soccer and softball, and in both she inspires me to do my best because I look up to her a lot.” Rhys said she is looking forward to senior night, which is her second-to-last game.

Freshman Kyla Haro plays second base on varsity and said she doesn’t really like playing second base very much, and she would rather play shortstop. “This is my first year of softball, so I’m really just working on being there for my teammates, and I’m trying the best I can,” Haro said. A challenge on the softball field is communicating with her teammates and knowing which plate to go to. “One memorable moment was when I caught a ball out of the air, and all my teammates cheered. I felt really good,” she said. She’s looking forward to next season the most because the new incoming freshmen, “I heard they were really good,” she said. Haro said hopefully she wins two out of the three games they have next week.
