The MBHS boys’ golf league season has come to an end, and with it, many fun memories have been made. The team has experienced many incredible matches this season, and they will soon say goodbye to their only varsity senior player. Throughout the season, the boys have shown immense growth and improvement, accomplishing their season goal, as well as never placing below third in a league match, out of six total teams.
For the team’s second-to-last league match before finals, they traveled to Cabrillo to play at The Mission Club. As per usual, the boys played great and earned themselves second place. Senior Stone Hawk was the top scorer at this match, shooting an 81. “Everyone played well,” he said.
Last but certainly not least, the team played their final league match before finals at the Morro Bay Golf Course. Junior and varsity player Reid Heffner recalled the team’s home match, pointing out the home course advantage that they made great use of. “[We scored] 390, which is by far the lowest, and we hadn’t even broken 400 yet,” he said.
Before the league season began, Heffner shared the team’s goal for the season: “We’re just looking forward to shaving down strokes and trying to shoot 420 by the end of the season as a team,” he said before league began. Now, the team is seeing amazing scores, shooting well below that goal of 420.
“It was an incredible night, we had three people in the 70s, including myself, and we actually beat Atascadero for the first time this year,” said Heffner. He explained that because of the structure of the league, winning first place at this match gives them the opportunity to potentially win league, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, at Rancho Maria Golf Course in Santa Maria.
Heffner scored the team’s low for their home match, shooting an impressive 75 across 18 holes. Andrew Cellar shot the second-lowest by just two strokes, with a 77. Morro Bay Golf Course is a notoriously difficult course to play on, as many away teams have noticed. Due to its location near the bay and on a hill, each hole is unique in that it rolls towards the bay (even if that means it goes uphill), something that home players are quite used to, but away players are unable to practice. This gave the boys’ team a great advantage, and they took the opportunity to take home first place at this match, a great accomplishment for senior night, where they celebrated their only varsity senior, Stone Hawk.
Hawk has been playing on varsity since his freshman year, following in the footsteps of his older brother. He recalls his favorite memories across the last four years: “Our trips to watch the pros play at Torrey Pines in San Diego,” he said. The team will miss him and his amazing contributions to the team, and he is looking forward to continuing his golf career in college.
