Morro Bay High School is all about improving and progressing. Whether that be for a quiz, school, work, or sports. Our staff and sports coaches want their students to always try their best, and if they don’t succeed in the beginning, they always encourage students to keep trying. One example of this is our stunt cheer team, which is always trying its best and hardest to improve and try to get better. The team has had some unfortunate losses against other schools and teams. No matter what, the team is always ready to get better and try harder at their next competition, which is an amazing example of them advancing and slowly progressing through the season, despite their hard losses.
Speaking of progressing, freshman Afina Segler said, “We have made a big change from the last season.” Also, the girls were able to perform a bunch more routines than last year. Segler also said that there’s been a lot more development. Which is amazing because that means they have learned a lot since the beginning of the season, and definitely are learning even more and getting even better. They definitely have a really good chance of winning some competitions, if not this season, then definitely next, because they will have been training for a while and are ready to compete.
The team has competed in eight total matches. Having to practice and learn all those stunts and performing them at the competitions, and only having eight opportunities to win, can be more stressful than some would think. Luckily, their season goes pretty long, though, so they do have some time to fit in extra practice and effort, so they will perform the greatest possible and outsmart their competition. To add on to this, Segler said, “Our stunt team has played a bunch of games and our season goes pretty long, but our last game was scheduled for today, but unfortunately, we didn’t end up going to it.”
Stunt cheer is a competitive team sport that takes cheerleading’s most technical elements, which helps people get an idea of why it’s so hard and takes so much time/practice. Stunt is not just a regular sport, but a sport that requires partner stunts, pyramids, tossing people in the air, tumbling, which transforms the cheerleaders into a head-to-head competition. There is also usually no crowd, no cheer. Just pure athletic execution judged against an opponent. This can cause the room to be super quiet and just silent judgment from the judges and competitors.
Every stunt performed is done with precision to create a breathtaking view for anyone watching and for other teams. Stunt is all about progressing and improving through the season, so when it is time to compete, they are accomplishing phenomenal things and stunts.
