Local coffee is common in Morro Bay, California, and many students drink coffee before or during the school day. It is common to see people walking around with coffee cups, and more and more people choose local coffee shops over big chains. One coffee shop that is often mentioned is Scout Coffee, which many students say is their favorite in the area.

Sara Stock said Scout Coffee is her favorite coffee shop, and usually orders iced coffee, “I usually get an iced latte with an extra shot of espresso and whatever seasonal syrup they have.” She also explains that she likes to make coffee at home with local coffee beans. “I use the SLO roasted coffee, pirate’s grog coffee beans, and I get new ones every single week to keep them fresh.” Stock saidthat homemade coffee is better because she can make it the way she wants. “I honestly just think I make the espresso better, and I get to customize it.” She also mentioned that she started drinking coffee when she was young. “When I was like 10, not like espresso, but I would just have drip coffee in the morning with my parents,” said Stock.

I really like going to Scout,” said senior Juliana Gonzalez. Her favorite order is an iced vanilla latte with only one shot of espresso. “I don’t like coffee that’s too strong because it can taste burnt,” Gonzalez explains that she likes Scout Coffee better than Starbucks because the place feels different. “Everybody’s really friendly there,” said Gonzalez. She also added that how strong the coffee she drinks depends on the day. “If I feel really tired, I’m gonna need really strong coffee,” Gonzalez said. “Support your local coffee shops.”

Harper Wingett-Wilson also agreed that Scout Coffee is her favorite in Morro Bay. “I like to get an iced latte with flavoring in it,” said Wingett-Wilson, describing her typical order. With Scout’s wonderful and warm ambiance, it’s enjoyed by most MBHS students. “The inside of their shops is really cute.” She says many students in Morro Bay drink coffee, “I see people walking around with coffee a lot.” Wingett-Wilson also mentions Nautical Bean, “They have good drinks,” said Wingett-Wilson. But Wingtt-Wilson remains in her stance that Scout Coffee is better if you want regular coffee.

The interviews show that local coffee is common among students in Morro Bay. Many drink coffee frequently, both before and after school, and Scout Coffee is seen as a popular choice. Students say they like the taste, the location, and that it is local. Local coffee is a regular part of everyday life at MBHS.
