The Devastating Tragedy of Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa formed from a tropical wave that originated from West Africa, first being monitored for development on Oct. 16. The wave moved from the central Atlantic to the Windward Islands, and then traveled westward into the Caribbean and developed into a tropical storm on Oct. 21.

The Category 5 hurricane made landfall in Jamaica on Oct. 28, taking the lives of over 30 individuals across the Caribbean. The hurricane has since then made its way across Haiti and Cuba, still active, but now less intense. According to CNN News, Hurricane Melissa is now considered a Category 1 storm, which is approaching the Bahamas.

So far, four deceased men and one deceased woman have been recovered from the aftermath of the hurricane, being found in St. Elizabeth Parish. An update from The New York Times shared that the building’s roof collapsed on one of the men, and the rest of the individuals were found washed ashore.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness visited the Black River Hospital located in St. Elizabeth, speaking to the doctors and nurses about their experience .“It was the most terrifying experience in all my life,” a hospital worker said, “It is beyond imagining.

The storm claimed many Jamaican’s belongings, with USA Today reporting that businesses, houses, and boats were all destroyed beyond repair. Certain buildings included “storage operations for blood donations.” Jamaica’s country’s chief medical officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie, said, “We are urging all Jamaicans who can give blood.”

Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency reported that Haiti suffered over 25 casualties, and are still searching for 18 missing people. As the hurricane moved to Cuba, it then became classified as a Category 3 storm. This, however, by no means meant that the damage was insignificant, with hundreds of thousands of residents being forced to flee their homes.

In its aftermath, Hurricane Melissa has been recorded as the third-most intense Atlantic hurricane, as well as the most intense landfall in the Atlantic basin.

Each country, territory, and independent area that was affected by the devastating storm is slowly in the process of recovering, working towards rebuilding everyday life, and providing support for all those victimized by the tragedy.
