On May 21st 2026, the vegetation fire was located west of Paso Robles, and Melissa Chavez a writer from Yahoo!News said it “grew around five acres near Chimney Rock Road on Sunday afternoon.” The vehicle fire was reported on Sunday, May 10, a little bit before 1 p.m., near the 7900 to 8000 block of Chimney Rock Road west of Nacimiento Lake Drive. At 4:04 p.m., crews were dispatched to the area for a reported vehicle fire. The first arriving unit found a passenger vehicle heavily involved in flames with fire threatening nearby vegetation, the department said. The start of the fire is still unknown and under investigation. The vegetation fire was burning in some hefty fuels, which caused more firefighters and firefighting vehicles to be needed, such as planes and trucks. The fire was identified as the rock fire, and the blaze originally started as a vehicle fire before spreading fast and burning up parts of nearby vegetation, according to Cal Fire’s San Luis Obispo County Fire Department. By 1:26 p.m., Watch Duty reported the fire had grown to approximately five acres in heavy fuels, citing incident command updates.
Watch Duty for the fire said two additional air tankers and three additional type three engines had to be called to the scene to help slow down and stop the fire. Air and ground resources, including multiple engines and aircraft, responded to the incident, according to PulsePoint dispatch information and Watch Duty maps. Even though the starting of the fire is still unknown, this is exactly why you need to be really careful and cautious of your surroundings at all times, because one small mistake can lead to a big one, like catching the vegetation on fire and burning up five acres just from one car. Even though what caused the car to catch fire is unknown, there are still many possible reasons for the fire catching on fire, like spilled or leaking fluid, electrical issues like frayed wiring, or the car just overheating, according to Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. People nearby and locals are extremely lucky that the fire did not spread to them, or else they could’ve gotten really hurt or even possibly died, which is really fortunate that that didn’t happen.

The fire may not have hurt any people, but the smoke from the fire got so intense that it was visible on ALERTCalifornia cameras Sunday afternoon. Hopefully, no one was outside too much at this time, so they didn’t have to breathe in the smoke. Fire officials warned and advised people and residents to avoid the area just to be safe and to watch out for emergency personnel and equipment responding to the incident so that the officials could go to the scene safely and put out the fire as soon as possible. Chavez’s article from the Tribune said: “According to Cal Fire, Chimney Rock Road is expected to be closed between Lake Nacimiento Drive and Adelaide due to firefighting efforts.” This is a bit unfortunate for residents who might live in that area, but it will be good and a safe option in the long run. Mellisa Chavez’s article also said, “No injuries or structural damage had been reported as of Sunday afternoon. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”
Later in the day on Sunday, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded with two fire engines and a chief officer. Additional crews from Cal Fire and San Luis Obispo County Fire and the Templeton Fire Department also responded under a mutual aid agreement. The crews were able to quickly stop the forward progress of the vegetation fire and extinguish the vehicle fire.
