Frontier Airlines, known for its low-cost and affordable flights, just had its first fatal accident in its entire airline career. On May 8, 2026, the Denver Airport experienced an unnoticed breach in the runway security, which ultimately led to the death of 41-year-old Michael Mott.

On the eighth, Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 was set to take off, heading toward LAX. The plane carried 224 passengers, along with seven crew members, at the time of departure. As the plane began to taxi down the runway, it began to pick up speed relatively quickly.

Notably, the specific plane in this event, an Airbus A321 (which is a member of the Airbus A320 family), reaches speeds of up to 170 miles per hour during takeoff on the runway. Because of this speed and the significant weight of the plane, it is impossible to swerve or stop it in time to avoid hitting something in its path.

“Right about here, right about that speed is where they encounter a person walking on the runway. And at that point, going 120, 125 miles per hour… there’s no stopping that airplane,” said Captain Steeeve on YouTube, a pilot of 15+ years who documents his experiences on social media.

After the plane hit Mott, the pilot immediately began to come to a stop. “We’re stopping on the runway,” a pilot said, according to CNN. An engine fire was then reported, and the plane was evacuated immediately. Because of the engine fire and the smoke that filled the cabin, 12 people were taken to the hospital with injuries. Currently, five have already been released, and no complications have arisen with any of their recoveries.

The Denver International Airport has 36 miles of secured and patrolled fencing around its runways. These securities include barbed wire at the top of the eight-foot-tall fences, as well as security patrols, closed-circuit television monitoring, and other ground-based radar systems (New York Times). Still, law enforcement says that Mott was able to hop the fence and was killed just minutes later.

Mott’s cause of death was multiple “blunt and sharp force injuries,” according to KRCR. Denver’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Sterling McLaren, ruled the manner of death as a suicide. Previously, Mott had been arrested for multiple things, including first-degree trespassing and resisting arrest. In 2010, he was arrested under felony charges for domestic violence. In 2016, he was arrested for second-degree burglary, and in 2020, for felony assault on a peace officer.

Later, in 2025, Mott was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder involving a firearm. “He later pleaded guilty to second-degree assault causing serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to six years in prison. While incarcerated, he was again charged with felony assault involving a weapon,” according to ABC4 News.
