This winter break, there was a lot of snow that fell on the China Peak mountain. A lot of MBHS students go to China Peak every year during the same time over winter break. During this time, in the winter of the month of January, is when the air is freezing, and China Peak gets a lot of snow.  During the years 2014-2015 is so far when China Peak had the worst snowfall.

Faith Racine, a sophomore at MBHS, went to China Peak during the dates of 2-5th of January. Racine said that she thought the snow on the first day was good, but it was pretty cold towards the end of the day, which is when it got freezing and windy. Racine said “in the morning, early, it was when the snow and the weather were the best.” The runs were perfect, she said. Racine said, “If you got up super early and came to the mountain right when it opened, that’s when it’s the best time to be there. It’s when very few people are there and the snow is fresh and it’s sunny and warm.” Racine also says that the more you go up the mountain, the stronger the wind is and the colder it is. Being in the mountains, it’s best to go early to go up to the top of the mountain, and at the end of the day is the worst time to go up. It’s when it’s super windy and cold, and a lot of people are at the top trying to get down the run. Racine said, “I don’t like it when there are so many people on the same run because they are all at the same spot and it’s hard to go down because everyone is all crowded.”

Mia Garner, also a sophomore at MBHS, went to China Peak at the same time as Racine. Garner mentioned she doesn’t really like skiing, but when she gets up there, she always ends up having a good time. Garner mentions “the weather this year wasn’t too bad, but the only downside of it was that it rained, and that’s when the snow turns to ice, and then it’s not fun to ski anymore.” Being on ice skis is super hard and very dangerous if you don’t know how to ski, as you can catch an edge of both skis and a snowboard, and if you do, then that’s not good because you can fall and even fall down the whole mountain.

The weather wasn’t too bad, besides the rain that happened during the afternoon around 3 p.m. on Jan 3-4. It was sunny in the morning, then the weather switched to rainy and cold.

China Peaks’ weather this season has had 90-144 inches of snow so far. On Jan. 16, all the runs are open besides two of them, which is really good, and this is a good sign that the weather is nice. Most of the runs on the top of the mountain were not open because they were too dangerous.

Hopefully the weather gets better thought the season and people have a good time during this winter season. Hope to see you out there!
