Michelle Newton, a woman who had been missing since 1983, was recently found and reunited with her father. Michelle Newton had not seen her father since she was three years old and is now 46 years old. Michelle Newton was kidnapped by her mother, Debra Newton, as a young child and taken to live in Florida. Debra Newton told her husband Joe Newton that she was moving to Georgia for a new job. But when Joe Newton arrived in Georgia to join his family, both Debra Newton and Michelle Newton were nowhere to be found. Debra Newton and Joe Newton had been fighting for custody of Michelle Newton for 1-2 years before Michelle Newton and Debra Newton disappeared.
Around 1984-1985, a year or two after Debra Newton left with Michelle Newton, Debra Newton and Joe Newton had a “final phone call.” This phone call was the last time Joe Newton had spoken to Debra Newton. Around this time, Joe Newton started searching for Debra Newton and Michelle Newton, but no one knew where they had gone. After Debra Newton left her home with Michelle Newton they moved to Florida in The Villages and changed her and Michelle Newton’s name and identity. Debra Newton changed her name to Sharon Nealy and married a man named Wayne Brookover, and later took his last name.
This case was long closed, and no one knew where they were, but in 2016, the case was reopened at the request of a family member. The police later received a tip in 2025 that included the name Sharon Brookover, and with this information, the police were able to track her down. They used a picture of Sharon Brookover and a picture of Debra Newton and the DNA of Debra Newton’s sister to find that they were a match.
On Nov. 24, 2025, Sharon Brookover was walking her dog in The Villages in Florida with her neighbor, and the police approached Sharen Brookover, questioning her identity. The woman walking with Sharon Brookover said, “Uh-oh, they’re coming for you, Sharon,” jokingly, not knowing what was about to happen. Debra Newton was handcuffed and soon taken to jail.
Michelle Newton was located and told that her true identity was Michelle Marie Newton, and she was taken by her mother when she was three years old. She was later brought to her father, where he saw Michelle Newton for the first time in over 40 years. He told WLKY, “ I wouldn’t trade that moment. It was just like seeing her when she was firstborn. It was like an angel.” He also told WLKY that “She’s always been in our heart,” and “I can’t explain that moment of walking in and getting to put my arms back around my daughter.”
Debra Newton claimed that she ran away because she felt like a victim of domestic violence, and Joe Newton had threatened her, saying he was going to show explicit photos of her to her family. Debra explained that she felt like a victim and said she was a “young bride” because she got married at 17 and Joe was 20-21. Debra Newton is now being charged with
Custodial interference was seen in court on January 23rd, 2026. Debra Newton is not in jail and instead has been released on bond.
