Sports betting is something that has ruined not just the NBA, but also other professional sports for a long time. Thursday, Oct. 23, marked the day many NBA associates and Italian Mafia members were arrested in an FBI investigation on sports betting and possible money laundering. Terry Rozier is a big name who has been up in many arrests. Rozier plays for the Miami Heat and has been in the league for 10 years now, making him a veteran of the NBA. Rozier was arrested Thursday morning at a hotel in Orlando, FL, and is accused of illegal sports betting using NBA insider information. Since Rozier’s arrest, the Miami Heat have been playing phenomenally compared to the past, making it obvious that Rozier was selling the games.
The Portland Trail Blazers coach, Chauncey Billups, has been involved in the arrest alongside Rozier and Cleveland Cavaliers former player and assistant coach Damon Jones. The investigation led to the findings of illegal sports betting and rigged poker games that were backed by the Italian Mafia. “Billups and Rozier have been placed on leave from their teams,” the NBA said in a statement. Damon Jones is accused of illegal sports betting and sharing injury information with teams and big players like LeBron James. The NBA sent out a notice to all teams just days after the arrests were made, saying that all teams should review injury reporting policies.
FBI director Kash Patel said “a total of 34 people were arrested as a result of the year-long investigation covering 11 states.” Four separate Mafia families were hit with multiple charges of fraud, money laundering, operating an illegal gambling business, conspiracy to commit robbery, sharing injury information on players, and many more. “The fraud is mind-boggling,” said Patel. “As alleged, the defendants turned professional basketball into a criminal betting operation, using private locker rooms and medical information to enrich themselves and cheat legitimate sportsbooks,” said United States Attorney Nocella. “this was a sophisticated conspiracy involving athletes, coaches, and intermediaries who exploited confidential information for profit. Insider betting schemes erode the integrity of American sports, and this Office will continue in its strong tradition of holding accountable anyone who seeks to corrupt sports through illegal means,” said Nocella. Allegedly, the bettors received information from Billups, Rozier, and Jones before they placed bets and wagers in online sports books, retail betting outlets, and many other places.
This scandal scares fans as the new season starts, as it threatens the credibility of the NBA and raises suspicion among athletes. The investigation and arrests caused a bad outlook on what was supposed to be a great start to the 2025-2026 season, as the league attempts to restore public confidence and put in safety measures so that anything similar to this doesn’t occur again.
