On Saturday, March 28, a three-car crash on the Cuesta Grade resulted in the death of one woman, along with five other injured individuals. The accident occurred around 9:20 p.m., and it occurred “near the base of the Cuesta Grade,” according to KSBY.

CA Highway Patrol (CHP), the department that responded to the crash, reported to KSBY that the accident happened as a result of an attempted left turn out of Higuera Ranch onto the southbound lanes of Highway 101. The car making the left turn, a Toyota Camry, turned out in front of a northbound Toyota Highlander, causing a major collision in the northbound lanes of the highway.

CHP stated that this resulted in the Camry being damaged so that it had no lights. The front passenger attempted to escape the vehicle, but an oncoming Hyundai crashed into the immobilized vehicle, throwing her out of the car and into the southbound lanes. Later, she was pronounced dead at the scene, resulting in the only current fatality of this accident.

The other five individuals involved in the crash, two adults and three children, all survived the initial trauma and were “transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries.” Currently, there are no further updates on their condition.

The crash was large enough to stop the flow of traffic on both sides of the highway. CHP does not suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved in this accident. For the most recent updates, follow the SLO Tribune.
