Daily life in high school can be overwhelming; swarmed with classes and social pressures, there seems to never be a time when one can simply enjoy the moment they’re in. But with a determination to shift such a concept, two MBHS seniors came up with a solution.
As the 2025 school year began, Alana Shields and Lucy Duprey had the idea to start a new extracurricular entitled YOLO Club..
YOLO, the acronym for the phrase “you only live once,” perfectly suits what the club is all about: experiencing the now and living daily life to its absolute fullest.
Shields shared that the initial concept for the club was created by Duprey, who then “reeled her in to joining.”
“We really wanted to give people the opportunity to do more activities in high school. We just loved doing all these fun things outside of school, so why not put it in a club format?” said Shields, with Duprey adding, “We wanted a safe space for people to go out and have fun, just live life to the fullest.”
The club meets every other Tuesday at lunch, doing what could be considered more mellow activities, such as various art projects and different games. However, the club is also no stranger to participating in more adventurous endeavors, such as ocean dips and concert-going. When speaking to members of the multifaceted extracurricular, it couldn’t be clearer that the club offers numerous opportunities for a diverse range of MBHS students. YOLO covers all the bases; whether one is more spontaneous or more reserved, the club appeals to both parties.
As the school year has progressed, what started as a quaint club, composed of a small group of friends, has now become a space where a wide variety of students meet. Duprey and Shields both shared that this was indeed their intention when starting the club: to foster an environment where all will feel welcome.
Both being seniors, Duprey and Shields have only a mere semester left with the club they worked so hard to cultivate; however, the pair looks to the future with optimism. The two shared that they hope YOLO continues to grow once they’ve graduated, having many wishes for what the next year may potentially bring.
“Maybe students could even go on trips together,” Duprey said, sharing her wishes for the future of YOLO.
YOLO Club, though its founders have only a few months left at MBHS, will no doubt continue to persist long after Duprey and Shields’ departure from Morro Bay. The extracurricular has given students of MBHS an incredible opportunity and environment that encourages them to experience all the world has to offer.
Stop by Ms. Cherry’s room any Tuesday afternoon that you have free, because after all, “you only live once.”
