Morro Bay High School boys’ varsity and JV soccer teams have come a long way. The boys’ varsity team lost its final game in the first round of CIF against Saint Joseph on Saturday, Feb. 14. The boys team came in one goal short, losing the game 2-3.
Demetrio Macias Barajas, a freshman, was on JV and then got moved up to varsity for CIF. Macias said he was really happy when the coach chose him to move up. “Coach Shae brought me, Nakue, Kaleo, Chris, and Parker up, and it was super exciting.” Their last JV game was against Nipomo. Macias said they beat them 2-0. “I scored one, and Chris scored a top right bins goal,” Macias said. He was very happy with the ending of the season and their record of five wins and three losses.
Freshman Kaleo Gaberel was one of the JV players who also got moved up to varsity for CIF. Gaberel said, “My best game was either against Lemoore or St. Joes, but St. Joes wasn’t very good, so probably Lemoore.” The JV team lost to Lemoore in a very tough non-league game, 2-3. Gaberel also said, “CIF was fun even though I just sat on the bench, I was just talking to Demi and Parker the whole game, and it was fun. I think the best players are the people who got moved up to varsity. I think the most improved player is definitely Nakue Faulkner.” Gaberel was satisfied with their 5-3 record. Gaberel thinks the coaches are great, and he really enjoys having them as coaches. He can’t wait for the club season to start so he can improve and have fun with teammates he hasn’t seen in a while. Gaberel said, “Club is so fun, and I’m so excited to play club and win more games.”

Logan McCoaut, a sophomore on varsity, said, “The end of the season was not very good because we ended with a two-loss streak.” McCoat says the team was very happy when they made the playoffs, but they went into the game way too relaxed. “The first half was good, we were up 1-0, and then we were too calm in the second half and got scored on three times in 12 minutes.” McCoaut said even though the end of the season wasn’t the best, he still had the most fun season out of the two years he played. “Our best game was against Atascadero, where we beat them 2-0 after losing to them 1-0.” McCoaut said this season was filled with smiles and games that they could’ve won, but next year they should have a better record.
The end of the varsity record was seven wins, nine losses, and five ties. The end of the JV season was good as well. The varsity boys had a solid 35 goals and 31 goals against this season.
