Boys varsity water polo has had a decent start to their season so far. As of Oct. 30, they are 3-3 in the league and are currently sitting in 3rd place. Their most recent game was against Paso Robles High School, which had unfortunately ended in defeat for the Pirates. The final score of the match was a win for Paso Robles 11-9.
Previous to the game against Paso Robles, they played Santa Ynez in the league as well. This game, however, ended in victory for the Pirates, with the Pirates scraping a narrow win; the final score of this match was 7-6.
Prior to both of those matches, the boys’ water polo team hosted a tournament here at Morro Bay High School on Oct. 23. Varsity played one match in this tournament, which was against Cabrillo High School. The game ended up being a comfortable win for the Pirates, with the game ending with a score line of 11-7 in favor of Morro Bay. On Nov. 4, varsity played a Division 2 tournament playoff round against Edison. Unfortunately, the game ended in defeat for the Pirates, with Edison getting the win 14-8.
“The team’s main goal for this season is to make a run in CIF,” junior Miles Kennedy, varsity goalie, said. “My personal goal this season is to beat Santa Ynez, and my favorite memory so far this season was beating Santa Ynez.” The team is highly motivated and has a winning mentality, and wants to continue winning more and more. “I would also like to give a shoutout to Sy Nairne, he is the best player on the team.”
As of Nov. 7, Morro Bay is ranked at #195 in the state, having recently dropped down 26 places on the table. In the national rankings, they are currently ranked at #248, dropping down 33 places in recent times. The small difference between state and national rankings shows the quality of California teams and how high the level is here. This also shows how good the competition is and how good the teams Morro Bay plays really are compared to the rest in the nation.
The boys’ varsity water polo team now hopes to finish high in the league after recent defeats affected their season. Currently, Morro Bay sits in third place in the league with a record of 3-3, out of four possible positions in the table. They sit above Cabrillo High School, who have a record of 0-6 and sit rock bottom. Above them in second place is Santa Ynez High School, who have a record of 3-3 as well. In first place sits Paso Robles High School with an undefeated record of 6-0. This makes winning the league a very difficult job for Morro Bay.
