On Nov. 21, 2025, the sequel to the movie, Wicked, was released. Wicked: For Good is a follow-up story and the second act of the musical on Broadway. Since last year, the pink-and-green storm has taken over the world, capturing the hearts of audiences everywhere.
The total run time for the movie is two hours and 17 minutes. Everyone ran to the theatre to watch the star-studded finale to this wonderful story.
The second movie starts by reminding the audience of the conflict, animal discrimination, and maltreatment from the first movie. (SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD) The main character, Elphaba, swoops in to stop the treatment the Oxs are receiving and frees them. From here, we get a direct contrast with the ignorant, blissful life of her opposite, Glinda. While the pair was inseparable in the first movie, we see how their values differ in this one and how, in return, it affects the amount they see of each other and how the public sees them. Elphaba has been made out to be a “Wicked Witch” by Madame Morrible, the wizard’s now press secretary, all the while she is manipulating Glinda to be seen in a “Good Witch” light. The movie serves as an allegory for political conflict and racism in a community. The Wizard himself exclaimed in the first movie that he only weaponizes the animals for the rest of Oz to have a “common enemy” and be distracted from the fact that the Wizard actually has no real power. The message of the movie can be very applicable to our society again, and allows people to reflect on the political state of our nation and the treatment of others within it. As an audience, you are forced to think of what other marginalized communities could be criminalized, all for the government’s own personal gain from its citizens.

On a visual level, the colors in the movie were stunning, with the use of a strong yellow for the yellow brick road, the pink-filled room of Glinda’s, and the emerald green city; the cinematography highlighted all of those. As for wardrobe, Paul Tazwell, the designer, did not shy away from this film. Elphaba’s costume had sharp edges and excellent use of textures through her outfits, and carried symbolism with her when she didn’t wear her iconic witch hat during the song “For Good,” which she sings at the end of the movie with Glinda.
As for the negatives of the film, there are quite a few. Now, Act two historically hasn’t been very popular, so it was going to be rough to stretch it out into a two-hour movie. However, the film seemingly didn’t really try to make those adjustments to help the story flow more evenly, and instead added scenes that felt like information was being repeated again and again. The new songs sort of helped, Elphaba has a song called “No Place Like Home,” where she expressed her reasoning for wanting to save Oz when it has never once saved her, and “Girl in The Bubble,” the third to last song on the sound track detailing Glinda’s reasoning for ignorance and allow for her to realize what she must do to help Oz. Glinda’s song did feel the most necessary of the two, but the lyrics fell flat almost entirely and seemed rushed. Many audience members have expressed that they would have much rather preferred for Fiyero to have an extra song and have a further development of his character in return.
The cast and crew of both movies took great care of the story they were telling and the characters they portrayed. With the popularity of the movie, many people are going to miss this era in the world of cinema. There is a new sort of appreciation for musicals now, and those involved in the film are going on to do amazing things in the future.
